Shu Terase is Head of Retail & Special Projects at Pantechnicon. Having previously held titles at Monocle and Beams in Japan, his focus is now on sourcing Japanese and Nordic products for the apparel and lifestyle store in London.
What's the best thing that happened to you today?
I discovered some new unfound Japanese artisan brands that have yet to launch in the UK and are soon to be introduced at Pantechnicon. I also just enjoyed a delicious Shrimp Sando with Yuzu mayonnaise from our Café Kitsune.
Can you recommend 3 of your favorite lifestyle items from Pantechnicon?
Hender Scheme Othello set made from leather off-cuts, this is so beautiful and will last many many years. It will become a beautiful deep chocolate color once the natural leather is used and played with.
Kamide skateboard teacup - I love the juxtaposition of the traditional ceramic teacup but with a modern funky design of a skateboarding monk!
Rototo socks - super comfy especially with my Roscomar sneakers. Very addictive.
Is there anything you’re really into that might be considered obscure/unknown?
I love going shopping... without my wallet.
Do you collect anything?
I usually collect snow-globes from countries I visit so have a good collection of those.
Is there a specific problem in the world you’d like to solve?
Of course, Climate change is our responsibility and we need to be more aware of our habits. Reducing, Reusing and Recycling have never been more poignant and as a buyer, I try to select brands that have a sustainable outlook.
How do you think your industry could be more responsible?
The fashion and retail industry needs to pay more attention to waste and even with trends and seasons, I think it’s more important to buy one thing that is made well and will last you a very long time than spend money on many faddy trends that will pass by and you will end up throwing away.
Tell us about a belief you had early on in life that you now feel differently about?
I used to think I would be a famous footballer and thought that fame was what I wanted. I now realize that working hard and having a family is what makes me tick. I recently had a beautiful daughter Lilly and she never ceases to amaze me and brings me so much joy.

Do you believe in an Afterlife?
